Beginner A1-1a

Description:
Term 3 of a one-year absolute beginner’s course. Please note: This is not for complete beginners. If you are a complete beginner, please see Beginner Intensive. At the end of this course, you will be able to understand and use familiar, everyday expressions, and very basic phrases aimed at satisfying everyday social needs and situations. You will be able to introduce yourself and others, and be able to ask and answer questions regarding personal details, such as where you live, people you know and things you do or own. Katakana will be gently introduced during this course as well.
Please note: This is not for complete beginners. We will start a brand new beginners course in autumn every year.

Beginner Intensive (Brand new course for complete beginners)

Description:
An absolute beginner’s course. At the end of this course, you will be able to understand and use familiar, everyday expressions, and very basic phrases aimed at satisfying everyday social needs and situations. You will be able to introduce yourself and others, and be able to ask and answer questions regarding personal details, such as where you live, people you know and things you do or own. An Ideal course for those who are going to Japan for a holiday.
Please note: For this course, you will need to sign up and pay the fee for 20 weeks upfront.

Post-Beginner A1-2

Description:
Continuation of A1-1. Now you are able to start recognising and writing in hiragana and katakana. By the end of this course, you will be able to respond and interact in non-scripted situations where your talk-partner speaks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. You can also understand very short texts, single phrases at a time, and write simple isolated phrases and sentences such as those written on postcards. Kanji will be introduced during this course.

Pre-intermediate 1 A2-1

Description:
Continuation of A1-2. At the end of this course, you will be able to understand phrases and expressions related to areas of most immediate priority (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment) provided speech is clearly and slowly articulated. You will also begin to understand short, simple texts containing the highest frequency vocabulary, including a proportion of shared international vocabulary items. And you will also be in a position to participate in simple exchanges of information on familiar or routine matters.

Pre-Intermediate 2 A2-2

Description:
By now you will be able to understand enough to meet the needs of a concrete type, provided speech is clearly and slowly articulated. Also, you will be able to make sense of short, simple texts on familiar matters of a concrete type, consisting of high-frequency, every day and job-related language. Moreover, you will start to find quite straightforward giving simple descriptions of people, living or working conditions, daily routines, likes/dislikes, etc., either as a short series of simple phrases and sentences linked into a list or written as a series of simple phrases and sentences linked with basic connectors such as ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘because’.

Description:

During this course, you are working towards understanding the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered at work, school, or in leisure time, etc. Also, you will take in your stride most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. You can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar and of personal interest. By now you are comfortable describing experiences and events, or dreams, hopes and ambitions, and even give brief reasons or explanations for your opinions.

Intermediate 2 B1-2

Description:
Continuation of B1-1. By the end of this stage of the course, you will be able to understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered at work, school, or in leisure time, etc. Also, you will take in your stride most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. You can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar and of personal interest. By now you are comfortable describing experiences and events, or dreams, hopes and ambitions, and even give brief reasons or explanations for your opinions. At which point you will be on the verge of being able to engage in free-flowing conversation with native speakers in a relaxed, spontaneous manner, a major facet of studying at Level B2.

Description:
This course is ideal for leaners who have completed the B1 level of Japanese language studies or have equivalent proficiency. During this course, you will explore deeper aspects of both language proficiency and cultural understanding. By the end of the course, you will be able to communicate effectively in real-life situations and engage in cultural exchanges.

Post-Intermediate 3 B2-3

Continuation of B2-2. By the end of this course, you will be able to appreciate the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in your field of specialisation. You can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. You can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue, giving the pros and cons for any given situation. From which point you will be able to look confidently forwards to being able to use the language for professional purposes, a major component of Level C.

Advanced 1 C1

Description:
Continuation of B2-3. You will acquire the skill to recognise implicit meaning of both written and spoken texts. By the end of the course, you will be able to communicate with ease and spontaneity with near-native proficiency.

Focus on JLPT N1, N2, N3, N4, N5

Description:
This course is designed to prepare students for the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), usually held on the first Sundays of December and July. The five levels are N5, N4, N3, N2 and N1, with N5 being the easiest and N1 the most advanced. Students will be working individually on the grammar, vocabulary and Kanji (Chinese characters) for each level with constant support from the tutor. Students at this level will also be required to do homework. To take this course they will also need to have completed at the very least our A2-1 course or equivalent. At the first class there will be a test to analyse which level is suited to each student, and then at the end of the course there will be a short mock-exam. The students will need to apply for this exam independently, and as such the exam fee is NOT included for this course.

Focus on GCSE

Description:
This course is to help prepare for the GCSE Japanese exams, which are usually held in May and June. The students need to have completed our A2-1 course or equivalent to be accepted onto this course. There are four papers; speaking, listening, reading and writing. The class is highly interactive with both the tutor and with other students, by means of the numerous communication exercises set. Students will be required to complete homework, and will also need to make themselves available for one day in May and for two days in June in order to sit the exams. The exams are organised on students’ behalf and are taken at a local school in Bristol with exam charge which is NOT included in our fee.
